Give One, Get One

Production on the XO begins next month, but will there be enough orders to ensure that it gets to the children it was intended to help?

Nicholas Negroponte's plan was to design a cheap, energy efficient laptop that was capable of bringing the developing world into the digital age within a generation. Now, with  the One Laptop Per Child project in full swing and the XO ready for distribution, Negroponte isn't finding as many buyers as he'd hoped for. Part of the problem is competition from other inexpensive, child-friendly designs. Also,  XO can't yet run the Windows operating system has driven away some potential buyers.

But the XO has a lot of advantages—like the fact that it can be powered with a hand crank. Negroponte believes he just needs a "spark" to get the program to start living up to its high expectations. Hopefully that spark will come from "Give One, Get One," a sales strategy that offers Americans the opportunity to buy a great first computer for their kids, and donate one to a child in need, all for $400. Twenty-five thousand laptops will be sold this way in November, and perhaps the increased awareness for the XO in the United States will help drive further success overseas.
