Household Cleaners Linked to Adult Asthma

A new study indicates that household cleaning sprays may factor into one in seven cases of adult asthma.

November 7, 2007 —

It has been understood for years that cleaning professionals are at higher risk levels for a variety of respiratory illnesses. What has only recently come to light are the threats that regular use of household cleaning products pose to non-professionals. As it turns out, cleaning sprays alone may factor into one in seven cases of adult asthma.

A nine-year study of 3,500 adults published in The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine suggests that weekly use of cleaning sprays can increase the risk of developing adult asthma by as much as 50 percent. Air fresheners, furniture cleaners and glass cleaners were found to have the greatest effect.

We already know that there are serious environmental harms associated with the production and use of many of these products. We know that exposure to toxic cleaning products can contribute to children's asthma. We know that most of these products and the chemicals they contain are manufactured by environmental villains like Proctor & Gamble or Dow.

Luckily, there are now plenty of companies like Seventh Generation and Sunbrite offering non-toxic, environmentally friendly household cleaning products. They're not just available in health food stores anymore either; you can find them in any Wal-Mart and in most supermarkets now. It's time to permanently retire the Lysols and Windexes of the world.

Hi
I total agree with your article. I my self know from first hand experience. I have a almost 2 year old who had health issues with breathing and eczema. As well my self and my 6 year old son always being suffed up runny nose every day. Since over a year ago I changed out 99.9% of the chemical cleaning supplies in our home all our issues have been resolved. With my youngest we have not had to use inhalers for monthes now! His eczema has also cleared up in due to I swiched his bath products and lotions to DermaMed natural therapeutic products which are 90% organic. I just want to note that the changes did not happen over night, I think it took sometime for my home to detoxics from all the chemicals. If other people are going though the same or simliar issues try the chemical free house hold cleaners in a few monthes time you too may notice a big difference.

Regards
Tracy
