$10 Flights?  Come on!

Skybus Airlines offers no frills flying for as low as $10. Skybus Airlines offers minimal customer service and no in-flight amenities. But the price is right.

How much are you willing to give up, in terms of comfort and convenience, for a flight that's dirt cheap?  That is the question that Skybus Airlines has started to ask consumers.  The airline has no phone number, passengers are encouraged to check themselves in, and may even deposit and pick up their own luggage.  Yet, for $10, what do you expect?  Skybus Airlines made its debut in Spring 2007.

The low fees means that the company charges for everything else.  The first two checked two bags under 50 pounds cost $5 each.  The airline sells food, drinks and even pillows and blankets during flights. (You get to keep the blanket or pillow after purchase.)  Sales of merchandise help make up for lost revenue.

The company also makes up for low wages by paying flight attendants only $9 per hour, although they make a 10% commisson on sales during flights. Pilots also receive lower salaries than industry average, but are offered stock options and a profit share package.  The company has few overnight flights, which means its crews work fewer hours than industry average. 

The airline generally avoids larger airports and flies to secondary airports, which are less crowded.  The airline flies to approximately 20 cities, including Milwaukee, Columbus (its headquarters), San Diego, and Fort Lauderdale.  Its ‘New York’ service is to Stewart Airport, which is 79 miles from the city. 

Reviews have been mixed, but have generally concluded that you get what you pay for. The seats are relatively narrow and have little legroom and the crew is casually dressed (and some believe poorly trained).  Without a phone number—the airline asks customers to use email—the company is not very responsive to customer complaints or problems.
